Menstruation has its own set of do’s and don’ts, whether you’re on your first period or have lost track of how many you’ve had over the years. Following them is in your best interest since failing to do so can lead to big problems you don’t want in your life – especially around ‘that time of the month’!

So, while you probably already know what you should do during your periods, you might not be aware of what you shouldn’t.

If you’re curious about the important period don’ts, here’s a thorough list of things you should never do during your period:

1. Don’t use the same pad or tampon for an extended period of time:

You shouldn’t wear the same tampon or sanitary napkin for more than a few hours, regardless of whether you use a tampon or a sanitary napkin. Wearing a tampon for an extended amount of time might raise your risk of getting an infection, skin rashes, and even TSS (toxic shock syndrome), which can be fatal if left on for several hours (1). If you prefer pads, change them every 6 hours at the very least. Tampons should be changed every 2 to 3 hours.

2) No Waxing Or Shaving:

When you’re on your period, your estrogen levels drop, which means that if you’re harmed, you’ll feel the pain more intensely than usual due to greater sensitivity. This is why you should probably avoid shaving or waxing at this time. It’s also a good idea to reschedule a dental appointment you have when you’re on your period, especially if you’re getting a tooth out!

3. Refrain from eating junk food:

While it’s necessary to eat during your period, it’s even more crucial to eat well. Menstruation is an unpleasant experience, and it’s normal to seek relief in junk food or foods heavy in sodium. Indulging in unhealthy foods, on the other hand, can only add to your pain by increasing fluid retention (3). That is why eating a healthy diet is preferable.

4). Avoid Dairy Products:

It is essential to avoid dairy products during menstruation. Although calcium is beneficial at this time, you should take it as a supplement rather than getting it through dairy. Milk, cheese, and yogurt, among other dairy items, contain a form of acid known as ‘arachidonic acid,’ which can exacerbate lower stomach cramps (4). As a result, avoid dairy products as well as pork, beef, turkey, and chicken, which all contain significant levels of this acid.

5. Avoid Being Sedentary:

Do not, even if all you want to do is curl up into a ball and spend the entire day in your jammies. Sedentary behavior will draw your attention to your period discomfort, making it feel much worse. In fact, the best method to solve the problem is to exercise! Exercising can help you feel better in general as well as ease menstruation cramps (5). Aerobics is the most effective kind of exercise!

6. Do Not Schedule Appointments During Your Period:

As previously stated, your sensitivity to pain increases dramatically during your periods due to low estrogen levels in your body. As a result, you should avoid scheduling any appointments that may cause pain (such as waxing, threading, dental procedures, and so on) at this time. They can be saved for a later date.

7. Don’t Give In To Your Emotional Ups and Downs:

The worst part of menstruation is definitely the mood fluctuations, which may get a lot worse if you give in to them. Take some time off and do something that makes you joyful, such as reading a book or going for a stroll, instead of adding fuel to your grumpy fire. It has the potential to save you from a variety of terrible circumstances!
