The World most used online messaging app has put plans underway to introduced a password-protected, encrypted chats backup.
The app will request a user to confirm the phone number and select a password that is at least eight characters long.
Initially, WhatsApp cautioned all users that while the chats are end-to-end encrypted, the protection does not cover online backups on Google Drive and iCloud as that completely depends on the providers of the cloud service.
According to WABetainfo reports, the new feature is under works and will soon be unleashed. Screenshots were shared to show how this could be presented on WhatsApp on iOS and Android.
The screenshots read, …” to prevent unauthorised access to your iCloud Drive backup, you can set a password that will be used to encrypt future backups”. This password be required when you restore from the backup”
Another screenshot indicated that ” WhatsApp will not be able to help recover forgotten passwords “.
The development will make these backups accessible only to the user.
